Time Capsule Ceremony

9th Jun 2022

We enjoyed a little bit of living history in school on 7th June, when Stephen dug up the time capsule which had been buried in 1996. The capsule had originally been part of a 2020 Vision Project and was supposed to be opened in 2020. However no-one could have predicted that schools across the country would be closed with children learning remotely at that time.

We were delighted to invite some of the 1996 staff to join us for the opening ceremony. We were joined by Mr Tommy Gunn (retired principal) and Mr Phillip McDermott (retired caretaker) who originally buried the capsule. Mrs Madeline Fitzpatrick (retired VP), Mrs Anne McManus and Mrs Carmel Maguire (retired teachers), joined us for the event and took us on a trip down memory lane. Fr King who has continued in his role as Chair of the Board of Governors since and was also in attendance. Current staff who were also employed in 1996 were part of the celebration, Mrs Soraghan, Miss Dympna McAvinney, Miss Barbara McGeary and Mrs Rosaleen Martin. Mr Gunn opened the capsule and discussed each item with the P6 and 7 pupils. We were delighted to share a story written by Lily Maguire’s mum, Patricia. The contents of the time capsule will be photographed and shared on the website in the coming days. The children will now gather items to be placed in our new time capsule which will be buried in 2 weeks time.
