The Importance of Sleep for Learning

12th May 2026

As the nights become brighter, we may all feel like we have more energy and likewise, for children, it can be hard to wind down at night. It is important though that children get a good night's sleep. Please see a table issued by the Department of Education, advising on the recommended sleep time required for children. It is also recommended that children do not access digital devices for at least 1 hour before bed. The World Health Organisation recommend avoiding digital devices entirely for children under 18-24 months, excluding video chatting with family. Active, screen-free play is crucial for early brain development, as very young children do not learn from screens.
