International Day of Play

12th Jun 2025

Mud, Glorious Mud!

On Wednesday 11th June at St. Mary’s Primary School, we joined in the global celebration of the International Day of Play – a day recognised by the United Nations to highlight the importance of play in every child’s development, happiness, and learning! We got outdoors and made the trees come alive with muddy faces!

The muddy faces activity allowed the children to explore and connect with their school environment and was full of possibilities for imaginative expression.

Mixing together the elements of earth and water to create a mud face taps into every child’s instinct to investigate natural things. This activity combined art, science and sensory development, encouraged communication and confidence through creativity, and also gave the children permission to get really mucky! Studies show that being able to get dirty is an important part of a child’s cognitive development.

We hope you enjoy looking at the photos of our muddy faces!
